Mannequin Challenge/Birthday Surprise

Well it's been a busy couple of months, but the kids surprised me with a little birthday party and we did a mannequin challenge to have some fun as well today.

A big thank you to the students who set up and the parents that helped make the cupcakes for today as well.  You all are the reason that Jack MacKenzie is such a wonderful place to work.

Orange Shirt Day

I want to share some information about Orange Shirt Day.

Why do we have an Orange Shirt Day?

- To remember the residential school victims and those that were subjected to the generations of abuse and assimilation process

Why do we wear Orange?

- Phyllis Webstad is a survivor of a residential school.  Her story is the following:

Watch from 16:50-19:40 for her story

Why is this important?

- The last two residential schools to close across Canada were in Saskatchewan
 - 1996 - Gordons Indian Residential School near Punnichy
 - 1998 - White Calf Collegiate in Lebret

What was the experience like for children?

 - watch this video of our Jack MacKenzie SLC students reading Shi-shi-etko by Nicola Campbell

Why were Residential Schools so bad?

- Watch this video and have a conversation with your family and friends to decide:

Some questions you could ask yourself or your family and friends are:

-          What sort of bad things happened in Residential Schools?
-          What was the purpose of Residential Schools? (Why were they created?)
-          How would you or your family react if you had to go to one of these schools?

-          Why is learning about this part of Canadian history important?

Please join in the conversation today!

Wear Orange on September 30th and help us remember!

Canoeing

So this Tuesday some of our students go to experience their first canoeing lesson through Regina Public Schools.  Here are some highlight photos of some of our classmates!

All ready to learn!

Looks like most students are following instructions

Canoeing without a canoe? Who knew!

Not exactly what I do when I use a canoe.

Apparently these students look like they know what they are doing.

Looks like these boys passed their first lesson!

Next onto the Mighty Wascana!

Welcome Back!

Hello, my name is Kyle DuMont and I continue to teach Gr. 8 Mathematics and Gr. 7/8 Science. Looking back at last year, I am excited about the new group of amazing senior students we have this year at Jack MacKenzie.  I am looking forward to a fun, exciting and successful year.

I have been teaching in the Regina Public School system since 2009.  I spent five years at Thomson Community School and last year at Jack MacKenzie, all the while teaching grade 7 and 8.  My wife Tenille is also a teacher, you will also hear about our daughter Lily.  We have had a relaxing summer with a little landscaping, and visiting family and friends while spending time watching Lily grow and explore.

This year we will be using Google classroom for most of our assignments.  Your child will be required to have their homework completed and printed, or ready to be printed for each assignment due date.  The joy of having the assignments online is that where ever the student is in the world they can continue to learn along side their classmates.  Also if they are sick, or away for a number of activities they have the opportunity not to fall behind.  With the Google Classroom there is an option this year to receive parent updates as to what has been assigned and if your child did not hand in an assignment on time.  There will be a step by step guide for the parents on how to set this up during our back to school BBQ in the coming weeks.

I am also taking my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction through the University of Regina. I am very excited to be working with you and your children this year on their education journey.  Please feel free to actively participate in the journey with your child, I look forward to meeting you all and working closely with you this year.

If you have any questions, concerns or comments please feel free to email me at kyle.dumont@rbe.sk.ca, or call the school to set up an appointment at 306-791-8585.

Thank you,

Kyle DuMont
